There are no rules in fashion.
Actually, there are, but the most stylish people I’ve seen are the ones that break all the rules. Here are some tips that help me out when I don’t know what to wear.
Mixing and matching is key, layering can take your outfit from 7 to 10/10 real quick, it could be something as simple as throwing on a striped turtleneck underneath a t-shirt.
2. Accessorize with bright colours.
If your outfit is monochrome/ missing something, add in some colour. Don’t be shy.
3. Matchy-matchy isn’t a bad thing.
4. Everyone needs something striped.
Stripes are classy and will never go out of style.
5. “Pulling it off” is a mindset.
Confidence is the key to pulling off whatever you want. Disregard what anyone says/might say about your clothes, and wear that risky outfit you’ve planned out in your head for months.
6. Show skin strategically.
7. Don’t be afraid of bold colours.
Colours and patterns draw your attention. (All black fits are cool too)
8. Interesting jewelry and shoes make a huge difference.
9. Pair loose with tight.
10. Dress like you know you’re going to run into Rihanna every day.
(This is my motto)
Let me tell you the story of how I had to style my most recent photoshoot. Here’s the outfit:
I bought that “skirt” from Urban Outfitters. It was actually a dress.
Because of COVID-19, I wasn’t able to try it on in store, but it looked cute so I bought it with no worries.
I went home, tried the dress on, looked in the mirror, and almost cried. It looked so hideous on my body. I’m 5’2, so it’s a struggle finding well-fitting dresses because the waistline is almost always too low. The photoshoot was in 2 days and I didn’t want to go back to the mall.
So, I impulsively chopped the straps off, tore out the elastic, turned the straps into a matching necklace, stuck a pearl choker on top, and tucked a white lace cardigan into my new “skirt.” I snatched the skirt at the waistline using a gold purse chain as a belt.
The shoot turned out fantastic, but I definitely had to break a few rules. It felt bizarre wearing a purse strap as a belt but hey, it worked out.
